The first padded practice of this Patriots training camp brought a little chippiness, a surprise guest, and several notable absences.

The offensive and defensive lines were hit hard in the middle with key players out.

Defensive lineman Christian Barmore remains out indefinitely after he was diagnosed with blood clots over the weekend. Nose guard Davon Godchaux was in attendance, but not in full pads.

Center David Andrews was absent as well, and Nick Leverett filled in.

There was some level of hitting, including 1-on-1 drills between the linemen, but there wasn’t much tackling as New England continued to ramp up to full practices.

Here are five takeaways from the action.

Judon, Godchaux contract talks intensify

Matthew Judon arrived in his signature red sleeves at practice but did not wear pads.

He was spotted talking with coach Jerod Mayo on the sidelines. According to NBC Sports Boston, he was later seen walking off the practice field. He reportedly came back, talked with Patriots Director of Player Personnel Matt Groh, and then left again.

Judon made it known earlier in the camp that he is unhappy with his contract, which has one year remaining with a cap hit of $14,675,848 according to Spotrac. He is the highest-paid player on the Patriots, but his deal puts him 17th among players at his position in terms of average annual value.

Judon, who has made four of the past five Pro Bowls despite missing last season with a biceps injury, had previously said he would play on the contract despite feeling it does not reflect his value to the team.

Drew Rosenhaus, who represents Davon Godchaux, appeared at practice and spoke with Patriots executives Matt Groh and Robyn Glaser.

Godchaux arrived in shoulder pads but did not participate in team drills. He has one year left on his deal with a cap hit of $11.8 million. He said earlier in the camp that the lack of guaranteed money on his deal is an issue, but also said that he wants to remain in New England long term if possible.

Rough day for Drake Maye

Rookie quarterback Drake Maye did not have a great practice on Monday.

Kyle Dugger picked Maye off during the 7-on-7 session, where Maye finished 2-for-6. The throw was a short one to the outside, and Dugger made a nice play by tipping the ball to himself.

Things didn’t go much for Maye better during 11-on-11s. Maye went 1-for-5, with the only completion being a short pass to Javon Baker.

On the other hand, Jacoby Brissett had a strong showing, completing all but three of his passes. Tyquan Thornton made a sliding over the shoulder catch that drew cheers from the crowd.

Play of the day: Javon Baker — again

For the third practice in a row, rookie wideout Javon Baker made an eye-popping catch.

On Friday, Joe Milton hit Baker on a deep ball that traveled more than 60 yards for a touchdown. On Sunday, Baker made a basket-style catch on a deep ball that he said past experiences playing baseball helped him with.

On Monday, Baker was able to adjust to an underthrown deep ball from Brissett and made a leaping two-handed catch over a pair of defenders.

Uche leaves after a scuffle

Linebacker Joshua Uche left practice after a brief scuffle with offensive lineman Chukwuma Okorafor.

Okorafor was allowed to stay in the practice after the incident.

Leverett fills in for Andrews

Leverett handled most of the snaps at center on Monday with Andrews out.

Atonio Mafi, who primarily played guard last year, also got some work in at center.

Other than the Andrews absence, the Patriots stuck with the same first-team offensive line they’ve had over the past couple of practices with Caedan Wallace at left tackle, Mike Onwenu at left guard, Sidy Sow at right guard, and Okorafor at right tackle.
