Patriots defensive lineman Christian Barmore has been diagnosed with blood clots and does not have a timetable for a return, the team announced Sunday.
“Over the weekend, Christian Barmore was diagnosed with blood clots,” the team’s statement read. “He was appropriately treated by the doctors at Mass General Brigham, who tested, evaluated and treated Christian.”
“Our principal concern at this time is Christian’s health and wellbeing. Fortunately, Mass General Brigham provides some of the best healthcare in the world. While there is no current timetable for his return, we know Christian is getting tremendous care and we look forward to his full recovery.”
Barmore missed practice on Friday and Sunday after being limited at Thursday’s practice due to an illness.
Sunday happened to be Barmore’s 25th birthday.
Barmore’s agent, Nicole Lynn, responded to the Patriots’ announcement with the following message:
“I would be remiss if I did not thank the Patriots’ trainer, Jim Whalen, for his absolute diligence and care over the last couple of days,” Lynn wrote. “Today could have looked a lot different without Jim’s persistent and expertise.”
ESPN’s Mike Reiss noted that blood clots caused Patriots offensive lineman David Andrews to miss the 2019 season.
Barmore, who is entering his fourth season, inked a four-year contract extension worth up to $92 million during the offseason.
The 6-foot-5, 315-pound defensive lineman had a breakout season last year, tallying 64 tackles and 8.5 sacks. He has played in all 17 games in two out of the three seasons he’s been with the Patriots.
His absence will be a big blow to the Patriots’ defense, which was one of the best at stuffing the run last season.
The Patriots recently signed a defensive tackle, Josiah Bronson, who wore No. 75 at practice on Sunday.
Barmore and Davon Godchaux started every game on the defensive line last season. Reserves include Jeremiah Pharms Jr. Armon Watts, Trysten Hill, Daniel Ekuale, and Sam Roberts.
