BPD adds 20 more mopeds to its tally of confiscated vehicles

Officers seized 20 mopeds in the Back Bay and South End on Thursday, in response to ongoing community concerns about “reckless” driving, police say.

Officers were conducting traffic enforcement this week of off highway vehicles — including unlicensed operators, and unregistered and uninsured mopeds and motorcycles — focusing their efforts in the 500 blocks of Boylston Street, Huntington Avenue, Gainsborough Street, and the Ink Block neighborhood, according to a statement from the Boston Police Department.

Twenty mopeds were seized and towed for various violations of motor vehicle laws and parking violations, authorities say, and 16 criminal complaints are under review.

“This particular traffic enforcement is to address the ongoing community complaints of reckless operation of these vehicles seen in commercially populated areas,” the statement said.

Off highway vehicles, according to the department, are required to be registered with a number plate and expiration decal displayed, and be properly insured.

Police have seized dozens of mopeds and made arrests in connection to the vehicles in the past month as part of Mayor Michelle Wu’s summer safety plan. 

“This year’s summer safety plan will serve as a critical step in moving forward for our work year-round to make sure our communities are safe,” Wu said in a statement.
