In Boston and New England, the Fourth of July features a number of annual traditions: the Boston Pops celebration at the Hatch Memorial Shell, the reading of the Declaration of Independence and Frederick Douglass’s speech “What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?,” and of course, fireworks lighting up the night sky.
There are plenty of ways to celebrate the holiday, whether at a community and city event, or at home with friends and family. When we asked Boston.com readers to share photos of their July 4 celebrations, they sent us snapshots of their dogs decked-out in red and blue garb, a pirate party, an American flag made from crushed cars, and more.

This is where it happens July 4, 2024 at 10 am! The reading of the Declaration of Independence from the balcony of the Old State House – the same location where it was first read to the citizens of Boston on July 18, 1776. https://t.co/mt8mfoXL16 #Boston #Harborfest @RevSpaces pic.twitter.com/Tto7DpyWgP
