The Boston Symphony Orchestra’s 2024 Tanglewood season in Lenox is packed with exciting performances.
The season brings a wide range of programs and works by living composers, alongside a diverse lineup of conductors, family concerts, performers, and composers. The BSO’s opening night all-Beethoven program on July 5 puts the spotlight on violin virtuoso Hilary Hahn, as her talent launches a season that will showcase a wide spectrum of musical guests and the festival’s rich tradition as the BSO’s summer home since 1937. Other opening weekend concerts feature Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops performing favorites from Broadway today on July 6, and BSO Music Director Andris Nelsons leading soprano Renée Fleming in an all-Strauss program on July 7.
The Popular Artists series also returns this year to the Koussevitzky Music Shed, bringing musicians to the stage such as Kool & the Gang and En Vogue on June 23; James Taylor (who celebrates his 50th year at Tanglewood with already sold out shows) on July 3-4; the Pretenders on July 16; a triple bill of Judy Collins, Rufus Wainwright, and Indigo Girls on Aug. 30; and Dispatch with the Boston Pops on August 31.
Celebrating his newly expanded role as head of conducting, Nelsons will lead 10 programs throughout the season, including the high anticipated concert celebrating Tanglewood founder Serge Koussevitzky’s 150th birth anniversary on July 26-28 and 100 years since his appointment as BSO’s music director.
Tanglewood is known for offering performances that highlight musical talents from around the country. This new season is no different, boasting the return of favorite conductors Karina Canellakis, Alan Gilbert, Earl Lee, and Dima Slobodeniouk, and acclaimed artists Emanuel Ax, Joshua Bell, Kirill Gerstein, Steven Isserlis, Leonidas Kavakos, Yo-Yo Ma, Midori, Conrad Tao, and Yuja Wang — along with exciting Shed debuts by violinist Leila Josefowicz; pianist Bruce Liu; conductors Ryan Bancroft, James Gaffigan, Hannu Lintu, Samy Rachid, and Dalia Stasevska; and soprano Elena Villalón.
There will also be an exciting and diverse schedule of recitals and ensemble performances by renowned artists, including Emanuel Ax and The Knights; Kirill Gerstein, Joshua Bell, and Steven Isserlis; and Danill Trifonov and Leonidas Kavakos in intimate Ozawa Hall, in addition to Les Arts Florissants and conductor William Christie presenting a semi-staged version of Purcell’s opera “The Fairy Queen.”
Other popular shows include the addition of a second John Williams’ film night to the Boston Pops summer roster, as well as Lockhart leading a concert spotlighting the best of 21st-century Broadway music and “Jurassic Park” In Concert.
Tickets to the 2024 Tanglewood season start at $15 and go on sale to the general public Tuesday, March 19, at 10 a.m.
