Fresh off the release of the third season of “The Bear,” Ayo Edebiri is already hard at work on her next project — and unfortunately, it’s not a grassroots campaign to resurrect the Cool Dog.
The Dorchester native is currently filming “After the Hunt,” a dark, intense drama co-starring Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield that kicked off production earlier this week.
The film, directed by Luca Guadagnino, is about a college professor (Roberts) who “finds herself at a personal and professional crossroads when a star pupil levels an accusation against one of her colleagues,” according to a plot synopsis released by Amazon Studios.
“After the Hunt” is Guadagnino’s first project since “Challengers,” the steamy tennis love triangle drama that was filmed in Boston in 2023 and released in theaters earlier this year.
Along with Edebiri, Garfield, and Roberts, “After the Hunt” also features Springfield native Chloë Sevigny and Michael Stuhlbarg (“A Serious Man”).
Sevigny, Roberts, and Edebiri all posted a photo from the first day of production for “After the Hunt” on Instagram. Edebiri also shared an exclamation point-laden text from Guadagnino, who requested that Edebiri post the photo on her Instagram grid and not simply as a story.
“After the Hunt #notastory,” Edebiri posted, with Roberts sharing an unamused emoji in the comments.
Edebiri, who graduated from Boston Latin School in 2013, was back in New England recently to film “Ella McCay,” the first feature-length film in almost 15 years from director James L. Brooks (“Terms of Endearment,” “Broadcast News,” “As Good as It Gets”).
The film, which began shooting in Rhode Island in late January and entered post-production in April, stars Emma Mackey as a career politician balancing work and family as she becomes governor of her state. Along with Mackey and Edebiri, “Ella McCay” co-stars Jamie Lee Curtis, Woody Harrelson, Albert Brooks, Kumail Nanjiani, and Rebecca Hall.
