TV news veteran to take the reins at Boston 25 News amid concerns about staffing, viewership

There’s a new sheriff in town at Boston 25 News.

TV news veteran Scott Isaacs is joining the station as news director after a seven-year stint in the same role at NBC 10 WJAR in Providence, he announced last week. 

“Local news has never been more important than it is right now,” Isaacs said in a statement. “I’m honored to be joining the talented staff at Boston 25. I’m excited about evolving Boston 25′s innovative news product so that we are there whenever and wherever our viewers need us.”

During his time at WJAR, the station regularly ranked among the top three highest rated NBC affiliates in the U.S., raking in awards and increasing online engagement, Boston 25 parent company Cox Media Group noted in a press release. 

Before Providence, Isaacs spent 13 years at WCVB in Boston, leading coverage of the Boston Marathon bombing, mobster James “Whitey” Bulger’s capture and trial, and former New England Patriots star Aaron Hernandez’s downfall, according to the release. 

“We’re excited to have Scott join the Boston 25 family,” Todd Brown, station vice president and general manager, said in a statement. “This appointment demonstrates our ongoing commitment to providing high-quality local news, weather, traffic, sports and other programming our viewers love.”

Isaacs joins Boston 25 at a watershed moment, taking the reins amid concerns about staff departures, cost-cutting measures, and struggling viewership, as The Boston Globe recently reported. 

But in his announcement on X, Isaacs appeared optimistic.

“I’m grateful to be coming ‘home,’ and I can’t wait to start building something exciting with a great group of journalists,” he wrote. “See you all in a few weeks!”
