Mike Golic Sr.: ‘Andy and Pat are halfway to Bill and Tom’

Patrick Mahomes secured ring No. 3 in an overtime win against the 49ers, inching closer to Tom Brady's record.

During the last three seconds of Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday night, Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs accomplished something that only seven other teams have done before them: win back-to-back titles.

In a 25-22 victory over the San Francisco 49ers, the Chiefs became the first team in 19 years to pull off a Super Bowl repeat win. The last team to do it? Tom Brady and the 2003-04 Patriots in Super Bowl XXXIX.

In just five years, Mahomes has tucked three Super Bowl wins and three MVP titles under his belt.

Mike Golic Jr. appeared on his DraftKings podcast, GoJo and Golic, Monday morning to make his case for why Mahomes could be the next GOAT.

“Mahomes has now put himself at a point, where at just 28 years old, it is essentially him, Joe Montana, and Tom Brady all separate from everybody else. In terms of what they’ve done as Super Bowl Champions, postseason winners, and multiple-time MVPs,” Golic Jr. said.

Mahomes threw for 333 yards Sunday, completing 34 of his 46 passes with two touchdowns and one interception.

“All the conversations we had last week about legacy and GOAT conversations and him chasing Brady, all continue to be on the table and accessible in a way no one thought was possible when he took over originally,” Golic Jr. said.

When comparing their first seven seasons in the league, Mahomes’s record rivals Brady’s early career accomplishments.

“Andy and Pat are halfway to Bill and Tom,” Mike Golic Sr. said, agreeing with his son. “Bill and Tom won six, and now these two have won three.”

Following Sunday’s game, Mahomes said he knows he hasn’t reached Brady’s GOAT status yet, but he’s motivated by the possibility of reaching seven Super Bowl wins.

“It gives me something to strive for every single day. Just chasing greatness,” Mahomes said. “And whenever I’m tired and I don’t want to work out, I know that I have to do it in order to be in these moments like this.”
