Down by multiple runs on the road, with two outs in the ninth inning, it’s human nature to think a comeback is possible.
The reality, however, is that the odds are infinitesimal.
When the Red Sox rallied for a stunning, 5-3, triumph over the Yankees on Friday, it marked their first win of that exact kind over their archrival in at least 115 years.
Last night marked the first time in at least the last 115 years that the Red Sox won a road game against the Yankees in which they trailed by multiple runs with 2 outs in the 9th inning.

It was their first such win in any road game since 7/31/2016 at LAA (trailed 0-3, won 5-3).
Masataka Yoshida tied the game with a mammoth two-run shot to right in the bottom of the ninth, then Ceddanne Rafaela gave Boston a two-run lead with a two-run blast to center in the 10th.
The Yankees threatened in the 10th, but Kenley Jansen walked the tightrope masterfully to earn his 437th career save.

It was Boston’s first time winning on the road after trailing by multiple runs with two outs in the ninth against any team since 2016.
According to Long, the Red Sox had zero wins when trailing after seven innings in their first 65 games this season. In their last 22, they have five such wins.
Boston is a Major League-best 26-15 (.634) in its last 41 games, beginning May 19, and a season-high nine games above .500.
