Celtics are signing Derrick White to a 4-year contract extension

The Celtics were already returning their top nine rotation players next season, but their continuity will reach beyond that.

Derrick White is staying in Boston.

There was a time when going through an offseason without a substantial change to the roster would have annoyed most Celtics fans. But these Celtics are now the defending NBA champions, so stability is embraced.

On Monday, Boston took another step toward solidifying its core for years to come when it agreed to a four-year, $126 million contract extension with guard Derrick White, league sources confirmed to the Boston Globe. ESPN reported that the final year of the deal is a player option.

White, who turns 30 on Tuesday, averaged 15.2 points, 5.2 assists, and 4.2 rebounds for Boston this past season while shooting a career-best 39.6 percent from the 3-point line. He was named to the All-Defensive second team for the second consecutive year and he finished eighth in voting for Defensive Player of the Year.

Some of his finest work came during Boston’s sparkling postseason run, when he averaged a career-best 16.7 points per game.

The Celtics were already returning their top nine rotation players next season, but their continuity will reach beyond that. They will soon agree to a five-year, $315 million super-max extension with superstar forward Jayson Tatum, and at that point all five of their starters from this past season will be under contract for at least 2025-26, too.
